President Bush Recognizes Responsible Fatherhood

PARENT’S DAY PROCLAMATION 2006:
A gender neutral celebration of parents

President George W. Bush recently announced that he supports grants and programs to promote responsible fatherhood. At the same time he created “Parent’s Day,” which will always fall on July 23 of every year.

The Illinois Council on Responsible Fatherhood supports the creation of this important gender neutral celebration of parenting and its Chair Jeffery M. Leving celebrated it on Sunday, July 23, 2006 along with many other parents across the nation.  Parent’s Day is one of many initiatives that can help prevent fathers from continuing to vanish from their children’s lives.

The presence of a father in his child’s life is vitally important in the child’s development and safety.  Children who grow up in a father absent home are much more likely to be poor, to use drugs, to experience educational, emotional and behavioral problems, to be victims of child abuse, and to engage in criminal behavior.

The Illinois Council on Responsible Fatherhood is committed to a clear and measurable goal: to significantly increase the proportion of children growing up with an involved and responsible father in the state of Illinois.
